Conditional Probability, Three-Slit Experiments, and the Jordan Algebra Structure of Quantum Mechanics

چکیده
Most quantum logics do not allow for a reasonable calculus of conditional probability. However, those ones which do so provide a very general and rich mathematical structure, including classical probabilities, quantum mechanics, and Jordan algebras. This structure exhibits some similarities with Alfsen and Shultz’s noncommutative spectral theory, but these twomathematical approaches are not identical. Barnum, Emerson, and Ududec adapted the concept of higher-order interference, introduced by Sorkin in 1994, into a general probabilistic framework. Their adaption is used here to reveal a close link between the existence of the Jordan product and the nonexistence of interference of third or higher order in those quantum logics which entail a reasonable calculus of conditional probability. The complete characterization of the Jordan algebraic structure requires the following three further postulates: a Hahn-Jordan decomposition property for the states, a polynomial functional calculus for the observables, and the positivity of the square of an observable. While classical probabilities are characterized by the absence of any kind of interference, the absence of interference of third and higher order thus characterizes a probability calculus which comes close to quantum mechanics but still includes the exceptional Jordan algebras.

Conditional states and independence in D-posets
Conditional probability plays a basic role in the classical probability theory. Some of the most important areas of the theory such as martingales, stochastic processes rely heavily of this concept. Conditional probabilities on a classical measurable space are studied in several different ways, but result in equivalent theories. The classical probability theory does not describe the causality m...
متن کاملp-adic probability prediction of correlations between particles in the two-slit and neutron interferometry experiments
We start from Feynman‘s idea to use negative probabilities to describe the two slit experiment and other quantum interfernce experiments. Formally by using negative probability distributions we can explain the results of the two slit experiment on the basis of the pure corpuscular picture of quantum mechnanics. However, negative probabilities are absurd objects in the framework of the standard ...
متن کاملTesting Boundaries of Applicability of Quantum Probabilistic Formalism to Modeling of Cognition: Metaphors of Two and Three Slit Experiments
Recently the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics, especially methods of quantum probability theory, started to be widely used in a variety of applications outside of physics, e.g., cognition and psychology as well as economy and finances. To distinguish such models from genuine quantum physical models, they often called quantumlike (although often people simply speak about, e.g., “quant...
متن کاملNon-classical conditional probability and the quantum no-cloning theorem
The quantum mechanical no-cloning theorem for pure states is generalized and transfered to the quantum logics with a conditional probability calculus. This is, on the one hand, an extension of the classical probability calculus and, on the other hand, a mathematical generalization of the Lüders von Neumann quantum measurement process. In the non-classical case, a very special type of conditiona...

Conformations and electronic properties of a series of imidazobenzodiazepines are investigated by AM1 semi-empirical quantum mechanics method. It is shown that substitution of Cl in position 7 instead of 8, changes the geometry of the seven membered lactam ring; this may put the N5 nitrogen in a better positon to act as a hydrogen bond acceptor, and the phenyl ring in position 6 is probably...
